1 History 2 The roots of the University of Silesia in Katowice date back to 1928, when the Instytut Pedagogiczny w Katowicach (Pedagogical Institute in Katowice) was established in Katowice which exist till 1939.In 1950 Higher Pedagogical School in Katowice is established, however, first preparations to formation of what would later become the University of Silesia in Katowice were taken just after the Sonderkommando Kattowitz was the smallest of the Auschwitz sub camps in terms of the number of prisoners, there were exactly eleven. For a camp with such a small number of prisoners it was not necessary to build any camp infrastructure. Great Synagogue was the largest synagogue in Katowice (Kattowitz), Poland then Germany. It was built in 1900, designed by Max Grünfeld. The synagogue was set on fire by the Nazis in early September 1939.
